Annual Meeting with the Department of Fisheries

Last updated: 18.05.2016 // In 2005, after Thailand was seriously hit by the 2004 tsunami, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and the Department of Fisheries (DOF) in Thailand entered into an agreement to carry out a cooperative project in the Andaman Sea.

Norway’s part in the cooperation has been to share knowledge and experience on sustainable fishery management, as this is an area Norway has acquired some expertise on. The cooperation was extended following outstanding results in the 2009 external evaluation.

On Monday 9 May 2016, representatives from the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok, Norad and the Institute of Marine Research in Norway, met with the DOF and the Andaman Sea Fisheries Research and Development Centre (AFRDEC) in Phuket, for the final annual meeting for the cooperation. The discussion centred on the activities that have already been successfully completed, the few activities that are in their final stage, and the 2016 work plan.

The project has included four main activities, a survey based assessment of fish resources, workshops and reports focusing on management, supporting a student with his Master of Science at the Asian Institute of Technology, and project coordination. All the partners agreed in the meeting that the project has had a beneficial impact on sustainable management of fishery and marine resources in Thailand.
