Residence Permit

If you intend to stay in Norway for more than 90 days, or if you are going to work while in Norway, you need a Residence Permit. An application for Residence Permit must be submitted at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok, but will be forwarded by the Embassy to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway for consideration. The applicant has to stay in his/her home country until the permit has been granted by UDI.

Family immigration means that a family member living abroad is allowed to come to Norway to live with his or her family. The person who the family member living abroad wishes to be reunited with must have Norwegian or Nordic citizenship or a residence permit constituting grounds for family immigration. Read more

If you wish to study in Norway for longer than three months you must apply for a residence permit for students. You do not need a residence permit if you intend to stay in Norway for less than three months, but you must apply for a visa if you come from a country with a visa requirement for entering Norway, such as Thailand. Applicants who would like to apply for a Residence Permit to live, work and study in Norway can now register their applications on the Internet using the Application Portal. This will result in shorter processing times, no queues, as well as making it easier for applicants to reapply for subsequent permits.
