A Schengen visa for Norway and the rest of the Schengen countries has a maximum duration of 90 days. The visa cannot be extended once the holder has entered the Schengen area. Exceptions may be made if unforseen circumstances arise after your arrival in the Schengen area and your original visa was issued for less than 90 days. However, the total duration your stay in the Schengen area cannot exceed 90 days in the course of the last six months. The visa you are granted for Norway is valid in all countries in Europe that are part of the Schengen Agreement.

Who must apply for a Schengen visa to visit Norway?
In principle, everyone needs a visa to visit Norway. Exeptions are made for nationals from countries with an agreement with Norway waiving the visa requirement. For a list of the countries who do not need a Schengen visa to travel to Norway, please click here.
Thai citizens, who are not holders of diplomatic or service passports, need a Schengen visa to visit Norway.
How do I apply?
Step 1: Register an application on the Application Portal.
Applicants should register their applications online using the Application Portal. Choose the category Visa (Short visit) for Schengen visa applications. For more information on how to register your application online, please click here.
Step 2: Submit supporting documents and your passport.
When you register an application on the Application Portal, you have the possibility to book an appointment for when you would like to submit your supporting documents and passport at the Norway Visa Application Centre.
On this webpage you will find updated checklists of the documents which are required for a Schengen visa on the top right hand corner under 'downloads'. Which checklist should be used depends on the purpose of the trip.
Please keep in mind that lacking documentation in the application may lead to longer processing time and in some cases a rejection of the application.
Step 3: Case processing times and case handling
The processing time of a Schengen visa depends on each individual case. However, applicants should always apply several weeks before the intended journey. Applications for Schengen visas can be submitted at the earliest 90 days before the planned travel date, and at the latest 15 days before the planned departure date.
If the case is considered uncomplicated, it can be handled by the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok, in which case it will be processed within 15 working days (counting from the day the Embassy receives all the requested documents). If the case is considered somewhat complicated, the case will be handled by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway. Step 4: Application results and return of passport
When the Embassy has processed the visa application the applicant's passport will be sent back to the Norway Visa Application Centre with the Embassy's decision. When advised, applicants may pick up their passports at the Norway Visa Application Centre between 13.00 to 15.00 hrs from Monday to Friday.
Applicants can also choose to have the decision of their visa applications, documents and passports couriered (sent by registered mail) to their office or home address by paying a nominal additional fee at the Norway Visa Application Centre when submitting their supporting documents and passports.
Where do I apply for a visa to Norway?
Applications are to be submitted in person at the Norway Visa Application Centre in Bangkok.
It is also possible to submit visa or residence permit applications directly at the Embassy once an application has been registered on the Application Portal. Please be informed that all applicants who wish to apply for a visa or residence permit at the Embassy must book a prior appointment through the Norway Visa Application Centre (and not the Application Portal). The Norway Visa Application Centre can assist the applicant, free of charge, to make an appointment at the Embassy on phone number +66 (0) 21 18 70 04.
The Embassy will receive applications with a prior appointment made through the Norway Visa Application Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 09.00 - 11.00 only. Please be advised that the Embassy has a limited number of time slots per week, and that the case processing time for visa applications submitted directly at the embassy will be fourteen (14) days counting from when the Embassy receives all the required documents.
Application fees
The application fee for Schengen visas is EUR 60.
Applicants from the age of 6 to 12 years shall pay a fee of EUR 35.
The fee is waived for visa applicants in the following categories:

Children under 6 years

School pupils, students, post-graduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake trips for the purpose of study or educational training

Researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research, as per specific rules
-
Applicants related to (spouse, descendant or dependent ascendant of) EEA citizens who are excercising their right to free movement (on production of relevant certificates (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc)).

There is a service charge per application over the visa handling fee of 60 euro:
Online applications (with prior appointment): 660 THB
Online applications registered by the applicant at the Centre: 770 THB
Supporting documents
A number of documents are required in order to process a visa application. Please be informed that a joint electronic archive for the entire immigration administration will gradually replace the current paper archive. This means that all documents which are listed in the checklists below will be electronically scanned at the Embassy from January 2011. It is therefore very important that all original documents must be submitted with a perfect copy in A4 format.
Please do not staple any documents together as this will delay the scanning process.

Health insurance
Applicants must have a valid travel and sickness insurance that is valid in all the Schengen countries, and the minimum coverage must be EUR 30 000. For more information about travel/health insurance, please click here.
Visiting more than one Schengen country and unsure where to apply?
If you would like to visit one Schengen country, apply for your Schengen visa at the Embassy or Consulate of that country. If you would like to visit several Schengen countries, apply for your visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your main destination (i.e. where you intend to spend the most days).
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, but do not have a main destination (i.e. you intend to spend an equal amount of days in each country), you should apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the Schengen country which is your first port of entry.
Extension of Visa
A visa for Norway and the Schengen area may be granted for up to 90 days. However, you may not stay in the Schengen area for more than 90 days in the course of the past six months. an extension of a visa can only be given in exceptional cases, and only in those cases where the applicant has been granted a visa for less than 90 days. In order to be granted an extension of the validity period of a visa, new and unforseen circumstances must have arisen after the original visa was issued.
“New and unforseen circumstances” may be that the applicant has suffered an illness, that an event which the applicant was to take part in has been postponed/extended, or any other external circumstance which means that the applicant must change his/her original plans. Under the current guidelines, an application for a visa extension cannot be granted unless force majeure, humanitarian grounds or substantial professional or personal grounds exist. An extension will also not be granted if the purpose of the visit to Norway has changed. Norway is bound by the guidelines for visa extensions as set out in the Schengen regulatory framework.
An application for a visa extension must be submitted at the police in Norway. The police will provide you with the appropriate application form. You must take your passport with you when submitting the application. Along with the application, you must explain in writing the grounds for your application, and any documentation of the new circumstances which have arisen. In certain cases, the police may issue a visa extension. However, where there is any doubt that the conditions have been met or where there is cause for rejection, the application will be forwarded to the UDI for processing. It is a condition of a visa extension that the applicant has a travel/medical insurance valid for the entire period of the visa extension being applied for.
How to appeal against a decision
If your application for a Schengen visa has been rejected, you may appeal against the decision. If the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok has rejected your visa application, an appeal may be sent to the Embassy within three weeks upon receiving the decision. You may deliver the appeal in person to the Visa Centre, you may send the original copy by regular mail to the Embassy or you may scan the original copy and send it by e-mail to the Embassy. The appeal must be signed by the applicant or the holder of the power of attorney and should mention the grounds on which the appeal is based and any other information of importance to the hearing of the appeal. The Embassy can either reverse its decision or forward the appeal to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway. UDI will then make the final decision as to whether or not a visa shall be granted. For processing times at UDI for appeal cases, please click here.
